In the railroad town of Sweet Water on the Western plains, Captain Daniel Forrester, an old contractor who helped build the line, lives with his much younger wife Marian, whose grace and warmth make the Forrester house the centre of the place. Niel Herbert, a boy who worships her, gradually learns that she is unfaithful, that the Captain is ruined by honouring the debts of a failed bank, and that after his death she falls into the hands of the coarse and grasping Ivy Peters. The book is as much about the passing of the pioneer generation as about one woman.
