The Younger family, three generations in a cramped apartment on Chicago's South Side, wait for a ten thousand dollar life insurance payment after the father's death. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, wants to invest in a liquor store; his sister Beneatha wants medical school; his mother Lena puts a deposit on a house in a white neighbourhood, and a representative of its residents' association offers to buy them out. Walter loses the rest of the money to a swindler and considers taking the offer. The play, the first by a Black woman produced on Broadway, takes its title from a Langston Hughes poem.
