A lecture course Heidegger gave at Freiburg in 1935 and published in 1953. It opens with the question why there are beings at all rather than nothing, and asks why the question of Being has been forgotten. Heidegger traces the Greek word physis, reads Parmenides and Heraclitus against Plato, and works through Sophocles' ode on man in Antigone. Four chapters distinguish Being from becoming, seeming, thinking and the ought. The book is notorious for a sentence on the inner truth and greatness of National Socialism that Heidegger let stand.
