An encyclical letter of August 1879, issued in Leo's second year as pope, on the restoration of Christian philosophy. It argues that faith and reason cannot conflict, surveys the Fathers and the scholastics, and singles out Thomas Aquinas as the master to be followed in Catholic schools and seminaries. The letter launched the Thomist revival that shaped Catholic education, including Thomas Aquinas College, for the next century.
