The thousands of manuscript pages Leonardo filled over forty years, written in mirror script and now scattered among Milan, Paris, London, Windsor and Madrid. They never became the treatises he planned. Modern editions arrange selections by topic, on painting and perspective, the proportions of the body and anatomy, light and shade, the flight of birds, water and hydraulics, mechanics and machines, geology and the fossils that showed the sea had once covered the mountains, along with fables, prophecies and notes on his own life.
