An encyclical letter issued by Pope Pius X in September 1907 condemning Modernism, which it calls the synthesis of all heresies. It reconstructs the Modernist as philosopher, believer, theologian, historian, critic, apologist and reformer, tracing the whole to agnosticism about God and to the doctrine that religion arises from an inner sense and that dogma evolves. The second part assigns causes, curiosity and pride and ignorance of scholastic philosophy, and the third prescribes remedies, including the study of Thomas Aquinas, censorship and vigilance councils in every diocese.
