A collection of lectures and addresses from 1916 to 1923 in which the young Swiss pastor set out the theology that broke with nineteenth-century liberalism. Barth argues that God is wholly other, that the Bible contains a strange new world that cannot be reduced to religion or morality, and that the preacher faces an impossible task, since as a minister he must speak of God and as a man he cannot.
