The fourth Gospel differs sharply from the other three. It opens with a hymn to the Word who was with God and became flesh, and presents Jesus through seven signs, long discourses and I am sayings rather than parables. Episodes unique to John include the wedding at Cana, Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman at the well, the raising of Lazarus, the washing of the disciples' feet and the farewell discourse on love and the Spirit. It ends with the crucifixion, the empty tomb, doubting Thomas and a breakfast by the sea.
