An allegory in the form of a dream, written by a tinker and Baptist preacher partly in Bedford jail. Christian, warned that his city will be destroyed, leaves his family with a burden on his back and journeys toward the Celestial City, passing through the Slough of Despond, the Valley of the Shadow of Death, Vanity Fair, where his companion Faithful is martyred, and Doubting Castle, kept by Giant Despair. The second part follows his wife Christiana and their children along the same road.
