Faulkner's first published short story, which appeared in Forum in 1930. The townspeople of Jefferson, Mississippi narrate as "we" the life of Miss Emily Grierson, a proud survivor of an old family who refuses to pay taxes, buys arsenic after the Yankee foreman Homer Barron courts and seems to leave her, and lives shut up in her house for forty years. After her funeral the town breaks open an upstairs room and finds what she has kept there.
