The collection of German folk tales gathered by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm from oral and written sources, first published in two volumes in 1812 and 1815 and revised through seven editions to 1857, when it contained 210 tales. It includes Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Cap, Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, The Frog King, The Bremen Town Musicians and Sleeping Beauty. Wilhelm progressively smoothed and moralised the tales, but they keep more cruelty and stepmothers than later children's versions. The Harvard Classics selection includes about forty.
