The autobiography of Harriet Jacobs, published under the name Linda Brent in 1861 with Lydia Maria Child as editor. Jacobs tells how her owner, Dr Flint, pursued her sexually from the age of fifteen, how she took a white lover and bore two children to escape him, and how she hid for nearly seven years in a crawl space in her grandmother's attic, watching her children through a hole, before escaping north. The book is the first slave narrative to speak openly of the sexual abuse of enslaved women and of a mother's choices under slavery.
