A volume of sixty short lectures added to the Harvard Classics in 1914, four years after the fifty-volume set appeared, edited by the Harvard English professor William Allan Neilson and written by Harvard faculty. Grouped under history, poetry, natural science, philosophy, biography, prose fiction, criticism and the essay, education, political science, drama, voyages and travel, and religion, each lecture introduces a field and the books in the set that represent it. The volume was designed as a guide to reading the collection and was accompanied by a reading course.
