A brief epic in four books on the temptation of Christ in the wilderness, the sequel to Paradise Lost. After his baptism, Jesus is led into the desert, where Satan, uncertain who he is, tempts him over forty days with bread, wealth, the kingdoms of the world, the glory of Rome and the learning of Athens. Jesus refuses each in turn with quiet argument. Set on the pinnacle of the temple, he stands while Satan falls, and angels carry him back to his mother's house.
