An unfinished utopian fiction, published the year after Bacon's death. European sailors blown off course reach the island of Bensalem, a Christian society sealed off from the world for centuries. Its centre is Salomon's House, a college of natural philosophers who conduct experiments in caves, towers, gardens and laboratories in order to know the causes of things and extend the bounds of human empire. The description of the House is an early blueprint for the research institute.
