Written in Gujarati in ten days on a ship back from London in 1909, and translated by Gandhi himself the next year. It is a dialogue between a Reader, who wants to drive the British out by force, and an Editor, Gandhi, who argues that the real enemy is modern civilisation itself: its railways, lawyers, doctors and machinery. True home rule is self-rule, won by passive resistance, or soul-force, and by a return to village life and hand-spinning. Gandhi never disowned it.
