Muslims hold the Qur'an to be the word of God revealed in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad over some twenty-three years, first in Mecca and then in Medina. Its 114 suras, arranged roughly from longest to shortest rather than in order of revelation, proclaim the oneness of God, warn of judgement and describe paradise and hell, retell the stories of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and other prophets, and give law on worship, family, commerce and war. The earlier Meccan suras are short and oracular; the Medinan suras are longer and more legislative.
